New Adult and Erotica

In writing Freshmen Blues, I’ve stumbled into knowledge of a burgeoning genre—New Adult.

Before digital publishing, stories about people in college didn’t sell all that well. Publishers couldn’t find the market. Now, though, the New Adult genre—stories about people navigating life after high school—has finally begun to take off. People can read all about the dorm life adventures of various characters between the ages of 18 and 22.

I’m having a ton of fun writing Freshmen Blues. Chris Taklo is the epitome of the uncertain college student who’s not sure if he really belongs there, and his quest to figure out his talents and maybe even land Frederick in bed sums up a lot of the conflict often found in New Adult novels.

Of course, I write M/M. Oftentimes that means erotica. But in a story with so much self discovery, detailed sex scenes aren’t at the forefront. It’s there, as is the sexual tension, but it’s going to be a long road with a lot of twists and turns. In a New Adult story like Freshmen Blues, as a writer and reader I’d rather have plenty of plot and development before heading straight into the sex. There are plenty of erotica novels that take place in college that have the requisite amount of sex, but Freshmen Blues feels more like a New Adult novel than a pure erotica novel, and in my mind the themes of New Adult don’t necessarily lend themselves to straight up erotica. New Adult is about finding one’s place in the world, and while sex is a part of that, it’s far from the only part.

On the other hand, there's no real reason not to mix the two genres. There isn't the age consideration that goes into Young Adult, nor is there the audience consideration, as the people reading New Adult are typically older teens or adults themselves or are older adults who are reflecting back on their lives in college or after high school.

But what do other people think? Would you rather have New Adult stories with plenty of sex wrapped up in the self discovery? How erotic do you think New Adult should be? Do you want to see Chris getting it on with Frederick or Skye as soon as possible, or do you prefer the slow burn?

In sum, do you think New Adult and Erotica can be simultaneous genres the way Erotica and Sci fi can be, or are they a bit too different? Could there be a New Adult version of Debbie Does Dallas (Debbie does Dartmouth?) or would that violate the themes of New Adult?

Blog Hop Day 9: Interview with Jocelyn Dex!

Hello everyone,

Today on the blog, we have M/F author Jocelyn Dex, author of the lovely Araya's Addiction

Pretty awesome, right? Read the interview, and check out the blurb below!

-->
What draws you to romance, especially to the erotic demons that are featured in your work?
I’ve always enjoyed a good romance. I guess I love, love and the journey of two people getting to the point of love. Of course, the lust part is a lot of fun too! As far as the demons go, I was a huge vampire fan. A good vampire book still floats my boat but I was looking for something different. I read Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series and Larissa Ione’s Demonica series and kind of fell in love with the demon thing and then I created my own demon species.

We know you’re a romance writer. What’s your day job?
Right now, my day job is puppy mommy, romance writer, housekeeper (SO terrible at the housekeeping - sorry husband). But I’m thinking I need to go back to a day job because I miss the extra moola.

What was the very first romance novel you read?  What did you think of it?
I wish I could remember! It was a Harlequin romance and I loved it but can’t remember the name of the book or the author. I do remember that author wrote several books and I devoured them. It was just too long ago. After that, I found Johanna Lindsay and read everything she wrote up until about eight years ago anyway. One of my favorites by her is Warrior’s Woman. It’s a futuristic, sci-fi romance.

Do you have a favorite character out of all the ones you’ve written? Why is he/she your favorite?
So far, Valia is my favorite. Well, Valia and Kiberry. Valia knows she’s awesome and has a super fun personality. Kiberry is the scary, demon equivalent of a dog and I’m a huge animal lover.

What’s your current book list and where can we buy them?
Araya’s Addiction: Amazon * Ellora’s Cave * Barnes & Noble * ARe

I just found out that Valia’s Villain is being accepted for publication so it’ll be a while before I have buy links for it.

If you could meet any of your characters in real life, who would it be and why?
Kiberry! He’s a Tengur demon. A Tengur is kind of dog-like but with wings, and razor-sharp teeth. He’s a sweetie though, unless provoked. I’d like to rub his belly. :-)

Tell us more about the genre you write, and what appeals to you most about your genre?
I write erotic paranormal romance. I love a Happily Ever After and even though I enjoy romance novels with a “sweet” sensuality level, I really enjoy being able to explore, in graphic detail, the sexual escapades of my characters. Also, the paranormal is just plain fun.

How can readers connect with you? Do you have a blog?

Do you have a writing tip to share with our viewers?
Yes. Write. It’s really that simple. Sit your ass down and write.

What would you tell a reader reluctant to read erotic romance?
It’s really not porn. There’s more to it than sex, sex, sex. There’s an actual story line with a Happily Ever After or at least a Happy For Now.

How do you decide which kinks your characters like?
I don’t decide - they do. Seriously, I don’t plan out their “kinks” ahead of time. I hardly plan anything, sit down, start writing and they let me know what their likes, dislikes and quirks are.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
I’d like to have the superpower of transferring the stories in my head directly to the laptop. No typing. No struggling for the perfect description. Just bam! There it is.

How many books do you want to publish next year?
How many do I WANT to publish? Twenty! How many do I think I can manage? Maybe three.

Does anything get in the way of your writing?
Everything! Facebook, Twitter, GoodReads, blogging, giving my dogs attention, housecleaning (which again, I suck at), working out, reading…

 Now for Jocelyn's latest book!

Araya’s Addiction
When Kean wakes up naked, collared and locked in a cell, he knows thinking with his dick has finally gotten him into trouble. Part Incubus, Kean enjoys scorching sexual liaisons, a habit that has found him trapped, forced to help a Sempire rescue her daughter from certain death.

Unwilling to aid in anyone’s imprisonment, Araya initially refuses her mother’s “gift”, but the passion simmering between her and Kean is undeniable. As they explore their shared lust, both Araya and Kean enact schemes to save each other. Their best laid plans may awaken emotions that will bind them forever.

*Note: A Sempire is a female demon who requires semen to survive.

New Release!

Book 2 in the Enforcer's series is now available from Extasy Books!

Thorn and Kenneth begin their lives after college, and Thorn has his work cut out for him when he goes to meet Kenneth’s parents. The Victeni are nobility and have no problem putting Thorn in his place—or worse, simply ignoring him.

But Thorn quickly learns that winning over Kenneth’s parents is the least of his worries. Kenneth has been selected to become an Enforcer, and with Thorn as his lifemate, Thorn has as well. To become Enforcers, they have to pass a test, and their examiners are not always straightforward about what they need to pass. Thorn is uncertain about his chances, and even less certain about whether or not he wants to be an Enforcer at all. He loves Kenneth and wants to stay with him, but as the test goes on he becomes worried if being an Enforcer will really let him help his people, or if he will just be seen as a traitor.

And I am hard at work on books 3 and 4. :)
